FLICKER AND FLAME EFFECT CONTROLLER   FOR INCANDESCENT LAMP

This controller enables the use of any ordinary low voltage (6 to 48V) incandescent lamp to simulate the flickering illumination given off by a candle, oil lamp, or gas lamp. Special purpose bulbs are available for this but are often very expensive and come in few styles and voltages. The controller is completely electronic and produces a truly random effect. A microcontroller is used to generate a random waveform without discernable patterns or repetition cycle seen in other approaches. Therefore a realistic appearing flicker effect is achieved. Traditional approaches using several square wave generators and ordinary timer circuits cannot do this. The controller uses switching type circuitry and power dissipation is minimal. Useful for Halloween and Christmas lighting, or in situations where mood lighting is desired. Eliminates danger and fire hazards associated with candles and oil lamps. This controller can be used with one or more 6 to 48 volt lamps, up to a 1 ampere load, and operates on DC voltages from 6 to 48V. Useful in novelty applications and for craft projects, or other applications where safety or portability requirements make the use of AC line voltage undesirable. Flicker rate is adjustable for realistic effects with different lamp sizes.

Below is illustration of effect achieved using a 12V auto dashboard bulb and one of these controllers. The controller is mounted inside a small plastic Halloween pumpkin, and a type 89 automotive bulb is wired to the controller. A 12V DC wall transformer rated 500 mA is used to supply 12V DC. The controller requires about 5 mA, the rest is consumed by the incandescent lamp. Kit consists of controller board and all parts that mount on it.
